Rt Rev John P Chalmers

Former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland

The massacre at Srebrenica in 1995 was a dreadful wrong made all the more disturbing in that it happened at the end of a century when we thought that such genocide would never happen again on European soil.

The fact that this awful wrong was committed in the name of religion should never be forgotten and people of every religion should look deep within themselves for the true purpose of their faith, so that these things never happen again.

The fact that the victims were failed by the international community is also a dreadful wrong. It is right, therefore, that year after year we should hold such a remembrance, so that we do not repeat our inaction when such evils occur in other places.

So many were affected by these awful days of targeted killing, so we hold in our prayers those who died, those whose remains are still to identified and those who mourn such great loss. Without remembering we cannot hope to learn.

Today and every day we are thinking of the survivors left behind to mourn the thousands of murdered in the Bosnian genocide. From Prijedor to Visegrad to Srebrenica, our thoughts are with all who continue to fight for justice in the face of horrid genocide glorification.

"This is not a typical war movie, however, but a personal drama about a mother who tries to save her children."
'Quo Vadis, Aida?’ is a powerful drama that is Bosnia & Herzegovina’s entry for best international feature film at the Oscars. @BalkanInsight https://t.co/DJog2NI4qF

An unlikely (?) mix of Metal and the madness of war. But what an impact one gig made to a city under siege.

Books help us bridge ignorance and misinformation, an important aspect of combating hatred. Every Friday, we hope you'll join us in reading a book that discusses the Bosnian war and genocide. This week's book will transport you to war-time Sarajevo through a child's eyes.
